Brook & Birch

Designing a landscape that flows from inside

For this Langley property, the story wasn’t about starting fresh. It was about building on years of memories. Brook & Birch sits on the same land where the homeowners raised their children, a place so meaningful that they chose to tear down the original house and rebuild their dream home in its place. While the new home and tennis court were impressive, the surrounding landscape felt unfinished. Open lawn space was great when the kids were young, but now they offered little reason to step outside and explore. The potential was there, but it needed to be shaped into something richer, more inviting, and more reflective of the family’s lifestyle.

The challenge: creating new patterns of living in a familiar place

Large gatherings with lots of food often left guests crowded indoors, and the vast lawn beyond the windows did nothing to encourage movement outward. The family had deep roots here, with mature trees and years of routines tied to the property, but those habits didn’t make use of the land’s full potential. The challenge was not only to design new beautiful spaces but also to gently pull people into them, creating new focal points and destinations that felt natural to explore. It needed to keep the essence of home intact while unlocking new ways to live and gather.

A landscape built to spark curiosity

The design centered around the babbling brook. Carving through the property and anchored with a bridge, it became both a visual guide and a gentle sound that drew people out into the yard. From there, plantings and pathways created a rhythm of discovery. Pergolas leading into the rose garden, chairs tucked by the tennis court, and clearings under mature trees for quiet conversation.

Peek-a-boo views were intentional. Instead of revealing every space at once, the design layered sightlines so guests would notice glimpses of the entry points. The bridge, a shaded corner, a curve in the path. These encourage people to walk toward the experience and be rewarded at the end. At the deck, a graceful curve extended the home’s reach, softening the threshold and blurring the line between inside and out. It created the feeling of a welcoming gesture, pulling people gently into the yard.

An eye for detail

The mother’s passion for gardening shaped much of the planting palette. Unique, carefully selected trees and shrubs became conversation pieces and personal joys, reflecting her love of tending and watching the garden grow. Beneath the great cedar, the ground was naturalized into a shaded sanctuary, one of many micro-spaces that added depth and permanence to the property.

The brook itself was designed with subtlety. Rather than roaring cascades, its sound is quiet and reserved, meant for moments at dusk when a party winds down, or for mornings spent on the back deck. The deck itself is built with a graceful curve which extends the home’s reach, softening the threshold and blurring the line between inside and out. It created the feeling of a welcoming gesture, pulling people gently into the yard. Even functional details carried intention. The driveway pavers with a contrasting border that subtly distinguishes pedestrian paths from vehicle space, lending elegance without distraction.

A yard with personality

The final landscape feels like a reflection of the family themselves: welcoming, interested, and full of life. There’s space for long-table dinners, room for dancing under the string lights, and quiet corners for lingering with a glass of wine. The tennis court still anchors their active lifestyle, but now the yard offers so much more. Guests naturally drift outside, discovering one space after another, while the brook and plantings tie everything together with movement and calm. This yard, reimagined, is a space that the family can host the gatherings they love, while also enjoying everyday moments in spaces that feel thoughtful and connected to the land they’ve cherished for decades.
