Shade & Solace
Designing an everyday escape at home
In a quiet South Surrey neighborhood, a suburban lot has been transformed into something far more meaningful than its size might suggest. For this family, travel had always been a way to recharge and celebrate life, but with new mobility challenges on the horizon, the goal shifted. Instead of looking outward for travel experiences, they wanted to create an oasis at home. A space where dinners, fireside evenings, and quiet afternoons soaking up the sun could all unfold conveniently outside the back door.
The challenge: reimagining a small space into a year-round oasis
The home’s existing yard wasn’t living up to its potential. A tired concrete patio sat a full step below the back door, making access awkward and limiting. Overgrown planting gave our clients more work than joy, and the family’s dream of a low-maintenance, high-function outdoor space felt out of reach. The design needed to maximize usability and flow on a compact suburban lot, while considering both immediate enjoyment and long-term accessibility. The north-facing exposure added a unique complication. How to introduce a low-maintenance cover over the patio without casting the kitchen and dining room into shadow.
A design that balances light, function, and comfort
The solution came in layers, beginning with accessibility. By building a raised porcelain patio directly over the existing concrete, the transition from house to yard became seamless. This eliminated the problematic step down and allowed the dining, lounge, and cooking areas to sit on one continuous level. Leaving the existing concrete patio in also eliminated major demolition costs on the project, without sacrificing longevity.
Above the patio, a louvered roof system became the defining feature. Practical yet refined, it offered the flexibility to adapt the atmosphere. They can leave it open to invite sunlight into the house, angled for dappled shade, or fully closed for rain protection. Heaters were added to extend usability into the shoulder season and even some warmer winter nights, creating a true four-season living space. Importantly, the louvers were oriented to maximize natural light into the house, solving what could have been a deal-breaking concern for the homeowners.
Small-space solutions with big impact
In a yard under a quarter acre, every square foot matters. The design integrated multi-use features that expand possibilities without adding clutter. A low seating wall along the patio edge serves as casual seating, a buffet-style surface, or even a dining table bench when entertaining larger groups. Privacy screens backed with opaque panels created a lighting opportunity. At night, the backlit screens glow softly like lanterns, giving the lounge a warmth that feels far larger than the space itself. Planting choices were equally strategic. Taller species were selected to rise above the wall, providing a lush, immersive backdrop without demanding constant weeding to look nice. It became an elegant balance between the client’s love of greenery and the need for low-maintenance solutions.
A lifestyle anchored at home
What makes this project special isn’t just how it looks, but how it’s used now. Most evenings, the family eats dinner at the outdoor table, then simply pivots dining chairs around to the nearby fire table for conversation and warmth. It offers quiet mornings in the sun with a book, or cozy evenings under heaters as rain patters softly on the louvers above. By addressing both practical needs and emotional ones, the yard has become more than just a renovation. It is a deliberate investment in making the most of the time, seasons, and moments they have together.
